Introduction
If you’ve been a subscriber since mid-2025, you were already here when I published the post that performed best on my newsletter: Working on Complex Systems.
I really loved writing it, and I always had in mind to revisit it at some point. So, when someone at ScyllaDB reached out to invite me to speak at Monster SCALE Summit, I saw the perfect opportunity to turn it into a talk.
The video isn’t a 1:1 mapping of the original content. I expanded it with more examples and new ideas. In it, I define what complex systems are, then discuss their common characteristics, and finally explore patterns for navigating them.
